2010/05/27 | By Quincy Liang

Taipei, May 27, 2010 (CENS)--MiTAC International Corp., a major information technology (IT) and global positioning system (GPS)-device maker based in Taiwan, recently participated in the initiation of the Open GeoSMS standard developed by domestic Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) and pledged to jointly promote the standardization of Open GeoSMS in Taiwan

The Information and Communications Research Laboratories (ICL) under ITRI on May 19 unveiled its Open GeoSMS, an open-coordinate short message service (SMS) standard to allow transmission of map information and communications among different platforms of digital maps.

Open GeoSMS could enable users of one handset platform to receive map information and LBS (location based services) from other platforms, ICL indicated. To promote Open GeoSMS to the global market, ICL has won support from Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC), which encourages development and implementation of standards for geospatial content and services, geographic information systems (GIS) data processing and data sharing.

Open GeoSMS allows domestic consumers to send an SMS and take advantage of relevant services without compatibility issues regardless of their choice of telecommunication systems or handheld device, MiTAC said.

MiTAC has years of experience in R&D, design and manufacturing of positioning systems and handheld devices. In addition to showcasing the Mio Moov V780 (with location SMS functionality) recently, MiTAC has already launched its "Roadside assistance" function (relevant to Open GeoSMS application) in North America and developed navigation software with location SMS functionality for Android systems.
