High Speed Rail Sees Passenger Number Hit Record High of Over 3 Million in Feb.

2010/03/08
Taipei, March 8, 2010 (CENS)--More than three million passengers rode the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp. (THSRC) in February of this year, the highest ever monthly record, with estimated revenues of over NT$2.1 billion (US$65.63 million), according to C.D. Ou, chairman of THSRC.

During the month THSRC carried three million and seven thousand passengers, or an average of 108,000 passengers daily, for a passenger-carrying rate of 52%, a new high since THSR began more daily train service about two years ago.

Plagued by financial woes due to insufficient passenger volume, Ou said that THSR might break even with an average of 145,000 passengers daily.

To better serve passengers, THSR recently signed pacts with the island`s two leading airlines-China Airlines and EVA Airways-to offer preferential services at THSR`s Taoyuan station to the two airlines` outbound passengers who take off from Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

Besides, THSR plans to delay the time of its last south-bound train from Taoyuan to Chiayi, Tainan and Tsoying to 22: 31 pm from the existing 22: 16 pm, to carry more passengers from 24-30 more flights arriving late at the Taoyuan International Airport.
