OLED Shipments to Auto Applications Up 22% YoY in Q3`09: DisplaySearch

2009/12/31
Taipei, Dec. 31, 2009 (CENS)--Worldwide organic light-emit diode (OLED) revenues shattered its previous record to reach US$252 million for the third quarter of 2009, up 31% quarter-on-quarter (QoQ), according to DisplaySearch.

Data released from the worldwide leader in display market research and consulting also showed that the third-quarter OLED shipments were 21.7 million units, up 19% Q/Q.

Despite the state of the economy, increased demand in high-end mobile and smart phones has driven growth, DisplaySearch said, partially due to Samsung Telecom`s continued heavy promotion efforts of active-matrix (AM)OLED smartphone high-performance benefits.

Korea-based Samsung Mobile Displays (SMD) maintained its strong lead in OLED shipments and also captured a 73% market share in AMOLED revenues in the third quarter, while RiTdisplay Corp. of Taiwan ranked second with a 12% share. Another Korean player LG Display has also announced plans to start production of 15-inch AMOLED TV displays in the third quarter.

While the AMOLED market has increased in both shipments and revenues, passive-matrix (PM)OLED did not grow from 2008 to 2009, as a result of the shift from clam-shell style handsets that use PMOLED to high-end smartphones. Despite this, PMOLED demand is increasing in automotive applications adopted by especially luxury car brands such as Mercedes-Benz and Lexus. As a result, PMOLED shipments for automotive applications have increased to 427,000 in the third quarter, up 19% QoQ and 22% YoY.

The OLED market has also witnessed market consolidation this past quarter, with Eastman Kodak Co. selling its OLED display business to LG Electronics of Korea, as well as Innolux Display Corp. of Taiwan acquiring local counterparts Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO), originally the second-largest thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel maker on the island, and TPO Displays Corp., a partnership of Toppoly Optoelectronics Corp. and Philips Mobile Display Systems, including their OLED production.
