Taipei, Nov. 15, 2009 (CENS)--Following the acquisition of Chi Mei Optoelectronics by Innolux Display, the local TFT LCD (think-film-transistor liquid-crystal-display) is in for another major shakeout, as Chunghwa Picture Tubes (CPT) has become the new target for would-be suitors, including AU Optronics, Innolux, and Samsung, according to Chinese-language Economic Daily News (EDN), sister publication of Taiwan Economic News (TEN).
Analysts pointed out that following the merger of Innolux and Chi Mei, AU Optronics will inevitably make an all-out effort to acquire CPT, in order to defend its market share, after losing its championship in the local market.
Innolux has also shown interest in further expanding its territory in the local TFT LCD market, in order to deny opportunities to its rivals, according to analysts. Meanwhile, Samsung is eyeing CPT, one of its suppliers, since it can help the Korean firm penetrate the huge Chinese market, taking advantage of its manufacturing facilities in China and its close link with Chinese brands. Korean makers' interest in Taiwan's TFT LCD firms was underscored by their courtship for Chi Mei, according to the statement of Shi Wen-long, founder of Chi Mei, during the press conference for the acquisition of Chi Mei by Innolux last Saturday.
CPT is endeavoring to improve its business strength and may carry out capital reduction, in order to win better offers from would-be suitors, according to analysts.
