Taipei, Oct. 16, 2009 (CENS)--Both AU Optronics Corp. (AUO) and Chi Mei Optoelectronics Corp. (CMO), top-two thin film transistor-liquid crystal display (TFT-LCD) panel manufacturers in Taiwan, have reportedly won new orders from Samsung for 40-inch light-emitting diode (LED)-backlit products and will begin shipments in the fourth quarter, according to industry insiders. AUO and CMO have refused to comment on the orders.
Samsung is the most active player in pushing LED-backlit LCD TVs. DisplaySearch's data showed that the Korean brand targets to ship 2.2 million LED LCD TVs this year and the volume would jump to exceed 10 million in 2010. Sharp of Japan is expected to deliver about one million such TVs this year and increase the volume to five million next year.
Statistics showed that Samsung produced about 307,700 LED TV panels in the first quarter and 426,000 in the second quarter. The firm would must outsource more and more such panels so as to further expand its market share in the TV market.
Industry analysts pointed out that Samsung's orders for LED TV panels should be in the 40-inch range initially and then 46-inch products might be added. Both AUO and CMO have been supplying cold cathode fluorescent lamps (CCFL)-backlit TV panels to the Korean customer, so the product shift should not be too difficult, they added.
