Taipei, Oct.9, 2009 (CENS)--United Microelectronics Corp. (UMC) announced yesterday that it raked in revenue of NT$9.5 billion (US$288 million at US$1:NT$33) in September, helping increase its revenue for the third quarter by a sequential 21% to NT$27.4 billion (US$830 million).
The September revenue result represented a 5.23% rise from August and the highest revenue level in 23 months. Its third-quarter revenue growth is estimated to be only slightly lower than that of No.1 foundry player Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), whose revenue growth for the same period is forecast at quarter-on-quarter rate of 22.6% with projected result of NT$90.9 billion (US$2.7 billion).
UMC, the No.2 player, saw its capacity utilization rate surge all the way to 90% in the third quarter from 60% in the second quarter. At an institutional investor conference held last quarter, the company estimated that it would ship 10-13% more wafers in the third quarter than the second and forecast its average selling price to rise 5% in the meantime.
Based on the company's projections, institutional investors forecast the company to rake in around NT$26 billion (US$788 million) in the third quarter, lower than the actual result.
Industry executives ascribe the company's better-than-expected Q3 revenue performance mostly to rapid growth of contracts for its 65nm process foundry service from heavyweight customers like nVidia, AMD-ATI.
TSMC is forecast to have revenue of NT$30 billion (US$909 million) in September, slightly up from August's NT$29.8 billion (US$903 million), which in turn, was down from July's NT$31.1 billion (US$944 million).
TSMC will release its September result today. Industry watchers estimated that Intel's recent upward revision to its operation projections would give a boost to TSMC's results for the third quarter because a better-than-expected expectation for Intel's operation means thriving demand for 300-mm wafer fabs by PC-chip and graphics-chip vendors remain strong.
Market research organization IC Insight stated in a study that global shipments of IC chips surged 25.7% to 35.2 billion units in the second quarter this year and would further increase 17.6% in the third quarter to 41.5 billion units. However, it forecast the shipments would inch down 1% this quarter to 40.9 billion chips.
