Taipei, Dec. 10, 2008 (CENS)--Hon Hai Group, the largest private maker of electronics, recently donated 50 sets of touch-screen personal computer (PCs) and sphygmomanometers to the Taipei City Government.
The TCG said that the donated equipment helps to upgrade healthcare to remote areas by data transmission online, aiming to lower incidence of chronic diseases.
The donation to the TCG marks Hon Hai`s entry into the healthcare sector, with chairman Terry Guo announcing that his group would invest NT$100 billion (US$3.03 billion at US$1: NT$33) to develop biotechnology and medical businesses, as well as sign a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to donate NT$15 billion (US$454.5 million) to the National Taiwan University (NTU) to set up a cancer-treatment center on the island.
Hon Hai also plans to work with NTU in R&D to pave its road into the high-end medical-equipment market, which is expected to strengthen the group`s manufacturing in related businesses.
Industry insiders said that Hon Hai is trying to utilize its fully integrated supply chain in EMS (electronics manufacturing services) to tap the high value-added medical-equipment sector, a move expected to upgrade the group`s manufacturing expertise.
