Merry Receives Motorola`s Order for EQ5 Portable Wireless Speaker

2008/05/16
Taipei, May 16, 2008 (CENS)--The Taiwan-based Merry Electronics Co., a maker of speakers and receivers, has received Motorola`s orders for EQ5 portable wireless speakers and started shipping to the brand in the second quarter of this year, according to company sources.

The EQ5 portable wireless speaker is an accessory for Motorola`s newly debuted E8 series mobile phone, which sells for NT$2,990 per unit and is manufactured by Merry.

Merry has successfully developed MEMS (micro electro-mechanical systems) microphones, and kicked off trial production recently. Besides, the company has worked out medical hearing instrument, noise-free microphones and SMD (surface mounted device) microphones this year. Those new products have been either sent for certification or produced on a trial basis, and are expected to contribute significantly to the company`s profits next year.

Running at a lower-than-expected capacity utilization rate and suffering steep appreciation of the New Taiwan dollar, Merry scored net profits of NT$0.57 per share for the first quarter of this year, sharply down from NT$1.51 posted a year earlier.

However, thanks to most recent orders from High Tech Computer Corp. and Motorola, the company is expected to see its second-quarter revenue grow around 20% from the first quarter and enjoy an increase of between 1 and 2 percentage points in its gross profit rates for the quarter.

Noteworthy is that Merry has developed a series of portable wireless speakers since last year, and succeeded in winning orders from Sony Ericsson and another U.S.-based mobile phone brand for the products.
