Taipei, March 24, 2008 (CENS)--The clustering effect for auto parts makers in Dalian, northeastern China, which follows Intel Corp.'s recent decision to set up a 12-inch wafer production plant in the city, has prompted Taiwan's LED (light-emitting diode) makers Epistar Corp. and Everlight Electronics Co., Ltd. to consider jointly building plants there, according to industry sources.
If Epistar and Everylight's plan comes true, the two companies and Hon Hai Precision Industry Co., Ltd., which has been actively engaged in LEDs in China, will form a relatively dominant conglomerate. This, in turn, will probably trigger a shakeup in local LED makers' shares of China's domestic market for LED auto lamps and streetlights.
Y.L. Dai, deputy mayor of Dalian City, and Brian Banser, manager of material division in Intel's Dalian plant, together held a meeting to elaborate on Intel's construction of the new wafer plant, drawing hundreds of companies to participate in the 2008 Semicon China exhibition in Shanghai. Dalian City government attended the show for the first time, in hopes of soliciting more high-tech companies to move to its newly approved Jinzhou IT (information and technology) industry park, only 34km away from Dalian's economic development zone.
Dai noted that in accordance with China government's policies to sponsor development of high-tech industries in the country, Dalian City government has approved a 15% income tax rate and tax return rate of between 5% and 17% for companies in the Jinzhou IT Park. Dalian officials added that Dalian's GDP (gross domestic product) has grown to RMB70.3 billion in 2007 from RMB36 million in 1984.
An automobile sector has been formed in northeastern China, triggering huge demand for LED auto lamps and LED lightings there. This has attracted Taiwan's leading LED makers, namely Epistar and Everlight, to weigh the possibility of jointly tapping the market, according to Dalian officials.
